Chris Hardwick serves up more than just nerd with his friends and co-hosts Jonah Ray and Matt Mira.  The Nerdist podcast primarily consists of comedy and interviews with awesome people.  First off these aren’t like any other interviews out there.  They’re so sincere, relaxed and hilarious you’d think you were listening to old friends sitting on a couch making new friends with cool people.

The Nerdist podcast is enlightening and funny – Who would have thought I would learn so much useless knowledge from one place.

Chris Hardwick – Known for his stand-up, work on Singled Out and Web Soup, to name a couple, and is currently the host of Talking Dead and Talking Bad as well as the voice of Craig on Sanjay and Craig.  Who doesn’t Chris know?  Seriously it’s limitless.  I can’t say I know Chris personally but after watching and listening to him for a while I feel like I can make an honest assessment and say he is genuinely a nice guy, he works his tail off and cares about what he puts out.  The guy is friends with Neil Patrick Harris,  what else do you need to know beyond that?

Jonah Ray – Sidekick number 1 – A stand-up comedian and host of Jonah Raydio.  I’m in awe of the amount of music knowledge Jonah has squirreled away in his noodle.

Dead City

[rating=4]

Dead City written by Joe McKinney This story follows a San Antonio police officer during the night of the initial outbreak as he battles his way through the dead to get back to his wife and infant son. Joe McKinney sucks you in with action but where I think he excels the most is when talks about his fears involving his family especially when he talks about his infant son. Starting out I admit I was kinda bored because the zombie’s seemed to be stereotypical old school zombies.  That’s not really a problem with the book or at all, I think I was wanting something different at the time.  I am glad I kept reading because the pace of the book changed and kept me turning pages.  Between the action sequences, near misses with death I couldn’t ask for much more.  One thing that I love doing is theorizing about how zombies could happen and how they could be dealt with, so when that aspect was thrown into the dialog I was hooked. My one solid complaint is that at the end [spoiler]once the danger was dealt with there are no survival details delivered, just bam back to normal after a flash forward[/spoiler].

A buddy let me borrow his copy but you can find Dead City on Amazon

Day by Day Armageddon

[rating=5]

Day by Day Armageddon written by J.L. Bourne and narrated by Jay Snyder.

Told from the perspective of a journal that belongs to a Naval officer that is living in San Antonio Texas and is his account of the initial outbreak and violence that spreads.  Listening to the accounts makes you feel as if you are there feeling what he feels as he describes the decisions he has to make in order to insure his survival and the survival of his group.

Once you start listening to this audio book you won’t be able to stop.  I’m serious, I started last night and finished this afternoon.  Mick and a mutual friend turned me on to this series and I can’t be more pleased.

Excerpt from the book on J.L. Bourne’s website  I’m sorry to report that despite our best efforts, the anomaly has broken the boundary of government containment measures.  It is no longer safe to inhabit larger cities.  Safe zones are being established on the outskirts of high population centers and will be open to those not infected.

I got my copy from Audible.com or Amazon, same thing, and listened to it on my android.

Ender’s Game

[rating=5]

A brilliant scifi novel written by Orson Scott Card about children that are raised to be soldiers from birth in preparation for an anticipated invasion from an insect like alien race.  In this story we follow a young boy named Ender Wiggin as he is raised and trained to be not only a soldier but a leader.

I love everything about this book, from emotion, the action, futuristic tech and everything in between.  For what started as a short story released in 1977 and a book released in 1985, Card has an amazing almost foretelling view of the future to include detailed uses of the internet and iPad like devices.

A buddy of mine has been bugging me to read this book for years and I finally made a point to do so over the summer.  An additional kick in my butt to go ahead and read this is that I heard about the movie being made.  With that said I really wanted to read the book before watching the movie for which I plan to review with Mick.

You can find the book Ender’s Game on Amazon.

Borrowed Time

[rating=4]
Written and performed by Keith Hughes, Borrowed Time is a Scifi audio book about time travel.  The story follows Ness Relevant in his struggles to unravel the puzzle of a time travel device built by Dr. Bertrand and keep the device out of the hands of those who will use it for evil.  It’s a battle against time and if he looses it could be his life.

Mick and Redbeard enjoyed this story and if you enjoy time travel stories you will too.
